Outdoor Recreation

For outdoor enthusiasts Austin offers trails, climbs and lakes galore. Lady Bird Lake  (named after the former First Lady - learn more about her at the Wildflower Center) is surrounded by miles of hike and bike trails. With prime water-front views in the heart of central Austin, the trails are favorites of runners, walkers, and cyclists. For more on outdoor recreation check out the City of Austin’s Parks and Recreation Page.

Built along the lower Colorado River, Austin benefits from several man-made lakes - Lake Austin, Lady Bird Lake and Lake Travis providing plenty of opportunities for waterskiing, kayaking, sailing and fishing. For swimming, the cool waters of Barton Springs natural pool and Deep Eddy prove to be beloved favorites.

The Capital City

As the Texas state capital, Austin's skyline is hallmarked by the pink-granite Capitol building. To learn more about Texas history and politics take a tour of the Capitol complex and visit the Bob Bullock museum. The museum also features Austin's IMAX Theatre.
